Home Remedies for Fleas: Protecting Your Pets and Home from Fleas

If you are fighting the never-ending battle against this pest, home remedies for fleas are safer to humans and more cost effective as well. If you are dealing with a flea infestation in your home, using a home remedy might be just the solution that will have them moving on out – so that you can get your life, health and sanity back.

Also if the stores are closed and veterinarians unavailable, as in a post-TEOTWAWKI event, then knowing how to make and use natural flea remedies could come in handy.

Using Home Remedies for Fleas

Chances are that if you own a pet or live in an area that is prone to having sandy soil, you have dealt with a flea infestation in your home at one point or another. Using chemical treatments and bombs will be effective in some cases – but are detrimental to your pets, children and your belongings. Opting to use home remedies for fleas instead is safer and will end up saving you money in the end. Below you will find a few of what we feel are the most inexpensive and effective home remedies for ridding yourself of this blood-sucking pest.

Flea Collars

While flea collars are often helpful when worn by your pet, they will also be useful in helping reduce the presence of fleas inside your home. You can begin by cutting up several flea collars into smaller chunks and placing the pieces around your home. Make sure to place them around and underneath your pets bedding and near anywhere your pet frequents. In addition, if having fleas in your carpet is a problem and you are sure that you vacuum them up regularly. Prevent them from populating inside your vacuum cleaner by sucking up a few small pieces of flea collar into your vacuum bag.

Salt

If you have noticed that fleas are making a home in your carpet and you want to avoid purchasing expensive chemicals and flea bombs, one of the best home remedies for fleas you can use will only require a canister of salt. Salt will repel fleas from your carpet and will help drive them from your home. Simply open your salt canister and distribute across your carpet liberally as you would with carpet deodorizer. Leave the salt down for 24 hours before vacuuming up. Repeat this process twice weekly to help keep your home flea-free.

Borax

A useful tool for a variety of household chores, borax detergent is an excellent way to help rid your home of fleas. Borax is available at your local grocery store, and is one of those things you should stock up on while you can; It comes in a powder form – similar to powdered laundry detergent, and is often used for that purpose.

If you want to use this simple home remedy simply sprinkle borax on all of your cloth furniture and carpets. Allow to sit for several hours and then vacuum up. You can also put a scoop of the detergent in with your linens to help keep them flea-free as well. Borax detergent is gentle, non-toxic and inexpensive – making it an excellent option for home flea control.

Dawn

If you have pets – they will end up posing the biggest challenge in keeping fleas away from your home. Keep them flea-free too to help keep the blood sucking critters out of your home. Pet owners know the importance of keeping your dog bathed and groomed and many spend hundreds of dollars yearly on expensive flea medications.

While those medications do significantly reduce fleas, they are not 100 percent effective. Help remove remaining fleas from your pets by washing them in Dawn dish detergent. Dawn will kill fleas on contact. It is infinitely more expensive having your fur baby flea dipped every few weeks, than buying a bottle of dawn.

Fleas are a huge nuisance – not only to pets but also to owners dealing with home pest infestation. Chemicals and traditional means of eradication are often effective but they are often harmful to you, your children and your pets. If you are looking for a safer alternative, home remedies for fleas are definitely the way to go. They are most often completely safe and are much less stressful on you and your wallet.
